Default antiX-M8.5-beta2 available for testing.

Hopefully this brings us closer to release.

This uses the latest MEPIS kernel, latest icewm and fluxbox menu (in English) and hopefully fixes the network connection problems some users had.

If your beta1 or earlier is running ok, no real need to install this version (unless you want to provide feedback)

Download from here:

Post comments in this thread or over at antiX forums.

I can open a terminal but trying to open a root terminal results in a 'failed to fork' error message using the LiveCD.
The Broadcom bcm4318 is still not found but a lsusb lists it. I forgot iwlist and will edit this shortly.

After installation a terminal won't open with the 'Command for this terminal failed to run' error. A root terminal gives the 'failed to fork' error.
I can't use or logon using anything but FluxBox on both the LiveCD and the installed OS.

Antix-M8.5-beta2 runs really well in LiveCD mode (Dell Inspiron/Latitude and Compaq Presario Laptops).
Superbly actually - and no issues of note. But, after installing, it's a different ball-game.

It just doesn't boot up afterwards (...only tried 2 laptops). It just sits there at "Looking (waiting) for root file system"
Then after ca. 2 minutes it drops to a BusyBox / Initramfs prompt
"Gave up waiting for a root device" , "Alert! No root device exists" etc.
After a bit of looking around there (inside BusyBox) on CLI, I figured initrd wasn't setup OK (during the minstall).

I then booted up the Live CD again and just copied over the initrd.img-2....smp from there (installed one was 68034 smaller)
and the (was also missing) /etc/udev/* stuff to /dev/hda1 (the install created a /etc/udev file, not the directory - a direct copy of /etc/init.d/udev script (strange!) .
After this, it does boot to a console prompt ... the side-effect now is that during boot-up it is complaining about a "read-only filesystem".
"Cannot stat ... conf", "Cannot create (lock) file", " Cannot change group" ... everything gives "read-only filesystem".

I have already rebooted and tried lots of stuff i.e. the kernel parameter rootflags=rw,errors=continue, data=writeback but no change.
/etc/fstab is OK on the install . Can't get to X either, as the Xauthority can't be created read-only.

I'm seriously RAM-challenged here (Presario), so investigating it takes ages.
Don't know, if you've come across this issue already? (or if ...pt1.iso didn't have it, then I'd just rollback).

I'm really not sure how to troubleshoot or fix this at the moment (feels like I'm getting really close, but now running out of ideas).
Google isn't much help ...any advice appreciated.

Some have had this happen to them. Exactly the same ie for some reason /etc/udev not copied over correctly, and the same with the initrd.img.

I think pt1 didn't have this problem.

Thanks for the quick feedback,
I'll burn pt1.iso (have it already), then try installing it and see if it does make a difference.

Also, did you use custom install or auto?
I think the problem might be in the installer.

Mine was a custom install.

Davo, lucky9, if you get the same problem with pt1, could you try booting fromiso?

I cannot replicate this problem on my boxes, so don't really know where to start to fix this.

I always use Custom.
...as when it's my own setup, I'll be (chain-)booting at least 5x installs per PC/Laptop.
If I'm helping someone else out (Presario) I still usually pre-partition as well, just out-of-habit.

Presario - I had created 4 partitions already (fdisk via Slackware boot floppys) 2GB(root)/ 500MB swap / 3GB (home)/ 500MB (Test/Fromiso)
Dell - Just re-used already-created and redundant Ubuntu sda3/sda9 setup and re-used existing swap

Noticed that Mepis 8.5 beta installer (mepis-install 8.0.08 ) creates an initrd ca. 400KB bigger than Antix.
