Checked out the slides, long video, I have not watched yet. My opinion: from the slides only, at this point, he makes valid points.

for sure
if lnx is to grow, then <we> users need to stop thinking of free < as in beer>. to compete, it must be profitable. or at least, the end-user base must grow substantially !!!. ![]() |

Yes but the same points apply. Warren cannot make a living with Mepis, resulting in periods of his absence getting a real job to put food on the table. He needs to eat.

A commercial version of Linux would most probably be very much like OS X. The jury's still out whether OS X by itself is a commercial success, because it's hard to say whether Mac hardware subsidizes OS X or if it's the other way around.

Computers Suck...
Actually it kind-of points out the problem with computers in general. They have always been half baked, so to speak. The hardware never really get finished, from a design standpoint, before they are pushed out for sale. Software is relied on to "patch" or cover up limitations in hardware. Software it's self is also pushed out before it can be fully tested due to the myriad of hardware (that it is not perfect or perfectly compatible), it is impossible to test every possible combination. Windows users suffer through the same kinds of bugs, Just in different specific items. So the arugument that "Linux isn't ready" because of hardware support, is just another red herring. Computers in general are like a building that was built on a concrete base that hasn't quite solidified. It can be made to do it's function, but it would work better if step one had been finished before they had gone on to step2. |

And marketing used to call me 2 minutes before a presentation to get a projector going after they had changed every switch and knob. It would (that person was right) take at least 5 0r 6 minutes to get things up and I never got an applause like that, sniff, sniff. Only one guy asked me to join the dark side.
I'm with 79spitfire, Computers suck! And that's why I'm punching in Monday to do it all over again. The Tramp ![]() |
