after about 6 months of searching i thought "out of the box" and now i finally have sound.
here is how i got the sound to work. use mepis6.0 live disk and boot it up. login as root and mount the hdd that has your mepis 6.5 on it use file manager-super user and go to /usr/lib and delete the following folders firefox mozilla mozilla firefox then copy those folder plus flashplugin-nonfree from your root directory off of the live cd (/usr/lib) to the hard drive (/usr/lib) restart your computer into your hard drive and enjoy the sweet sound of success. so far it's working great for me. please share this with as many people as you can if you get it to work. i know this seems to be the biggest problem with alot of noobs like myself. * * * if this has helped you please leave a quick reply. * * * Last edited by goth mneph : 10-21-2007 at 09:21 AM. |

I was a stumbling new Linux user this May, when I first loaded SimplyMepis in a new build and discovered I had no sound. Mos from this forum spent a great amount of time, and I discovered he has an amazing amount of patience. With his assistance I found a hardware solution for the sound problems installing 6.5.02. that would not recognize the on board sound of the ESC GeForce6100SM-M motherboard. I borrowed a sound card from a neighbor's Gateway doorstop, I ended up purchasing the computer for the sound blaster card. I was so excited about Linux I built ten systems for neighbors, and co-workers around that motherboard, and I was getting the sound cards from ebay for less than $10 including shipping... I have since found that 6.5.02 works well in the older Gateways desktops, and most discarded Emachines after replacing the power supply without blinking an eye... But tis good to see a software solution, what motherboard, or computer model? Have you been able to duplicate this fix in another computer? This is a wonderful fix for a notebook user, where it is difficult if not impossible to change the sound card. I enjoy seeing software solutions announced, and yours must have taken a fair amount of experimentation... Tipping me hat, sir! yes, i've been working on this for about 6 months. after i installed 6.5 with beryl i didn't want to go back to 6.0 without the 3d desktop. i tried probably every other suggestion on how to get sound with no avail. then i remembered some post talking about live cds working so i gave it a shot and then i thought well, why can't i just copy the folders over from the live to the hard drive and BAM that's what i did. I just hope this works for others who have struggle and those who are new at this too.
i don't know what my motherboard is, i just got one from tigerdirect and put my PC together, but i do have an old sound blaster that was given to me around 1998 or 1999. oh and i'm running an AMD 2000 if that means anything. i haven't tried this on anything else, this is my only PC thanx again for the hat tip, namida12. Version 7, correct the non-reconition of the on-board sound for the ECS GeForce6100SM-M motherboard so I removed the e-cycled Gateway SoundBlaster CT5803 and placed it on the shelf. I now have built a newer system, using a ECS A770M-A and sound again was not discovered, but a five minute install and the e-cycled SoundBlaster is again producing sound. I believe the next vertsion, Mepis 8 might have a kernel update and that update will have newer sound drivers, that will adress my new motherboard's sound chip... Good to see a simple hardware change provides sound... Cheers mate JR |
